“You see, in the 1950s people went to their neighborhood schools. Due at least in part to our national housing policy, Black Americans settled in certain neighborhoods, White people settled in others. The result was continued segregation just because people went to the school near them.”

That is actually incorrect. Busing was used for purposes of racial segregation in schools. I remember standing outside my elementary school in Atlanta, Georgia. U.S.A. in the 1960’s waiting for the doors to be opened and watching busloads of ‘colored’ children being taken to ’their’ school.
