Wondering if this author has read Guy DeBord's The Society of the Spectacle (1967).

…the Kit Kat Klub, they are in another world, caught up in the light, swallowed up by the spectacle. At the center of Cabaret’s amoral universe is the gradual dissolution of the belief that spectacle in and of itself is beautiful. Spectacle is awesome, a totality that explodes any qualitative notions of beauty or ugliness. It is narcotic.

Wondering if this author has read Guy DeBord's The Society of the Spectacle (1967). Those words would have been right at home in his book.
(At bottom, for him the Spectacle is mediated life, as opposed to actually lived life. He analyzed the affect of increasing mediation on society and explored--with amazing prescience--how a culture dominated by it would evolve.)
