Wondering if this author has read Guy DeBord's The Society of the Spectacle (1967). Those words would have been right at home in his book.

(At bottom, for him the Spectacle is mediated life, as opposed to actually lived life. He analyzed the affect of increasing mediation on society and explored--with amazing prescience--how a culture dominated by it would evolve.)
