While I agree with this author's analysis (as far as it goes), to my mind that quote from the article summarizes the biggest problem we face. I see it as a way of expressing an abject fear of going beyond the status quo in a serious way. Yet, the status quo is the problem.

In my analysis, the neo-right has abandoned conservative ideology--for nothing but a malevolent hatred of political liberalism. To defeat the neo-right will require a bigger, better alternative than anything the Democrats have imagined, much less proposed.

Politics aside, this world is in desperate need of a really big, really new idea, one that represents a real advance in thinking, not more of the same 'programs' and 'policies' tied to worn-out ideologies that have been around for centuries. Here is such an idea: "Same Economy, Way Better Outcomes for Society." On a more philosophical plane, there is "Locke and Marx." (Both are here in Medium, neither is behind the paywall).
