What seems obvious is that revolutionary, i.e., transformative, change is a must. Indeed, as Abela has written in other places it is most assuredly coming, one way or another. The question is whether we will employ our human ability to change in order to avoid disaster or refuse to change and endure whatever evils befall us.
As Abela recognizes in this article, what is needed is a paradigm to change to. One such paradigm is available for consideration. It is essentially conservative--it leaves income inequality in place--yet transforms the outcomes for society of the existing system, to include having demographics govern total output (reducing the issue of sustainability to that one variable). It also eliminates unemployment and poverty. I don't see how we can hope for a more politically acceptable alternative to the path humanity is on at present.
