Monopolies arbitrarily restrict output in order to sustain higher rates of profit through higher prices, thus harming the general public. (Monopolies are only a real problem with generally necessary goods/services.) Going back to your previous comment, might there be a case for considering polygamy to be unfair manipulation of the 'market' for wives (restricting the matter thusly for now)? Should the capacity to support materially multiple wives be a valid justification for having more than one, to the possible detriment of less well-off men? Or does that rise to the level of a harm to be criminalized? Does it come down to whether a wife is a need or merely a want? Interesting stuff--to me.
