Unfortunately, I am coming to agree that the chances of averting the collapse of civilization are approaching zero. Too many people are self-centered, intellectually lazy cowards.

Still, as noted in this article a better approach to the economy as a societal system is something to seek in the present that can perhaps survive into a future regeneration of civilization. I stumbled upon a way to make a single change to the existing economic system that would transform its impacts on society, including but not limited to sustainability.
