Too often in 'mainstream' economics that which would occur in a world of 'perfect competition' is presumed to occur in a world that is nothing like that. One can't help but suspect that such presumptions are intentionally used by the powers that be as cover for knowingly facilitating outcomes that are blatantly based on asymmetrical relations of power.
