There was also a brief period in the history of rock music when the artists were in charge. The ability of marketing, the propaganda/cooption arm of capitalism, to absorb any new cultural impulse and harness it to capitalism really is quite extraordinary. Simply put, there apparently is no cultural thing enough money can't buy--or at least buy enough of it to make the rest of it irrelevant.
