There is a way to "get rid of poverty" immediately: implement a "democratically distributed income." The money for the income would be created as needed. It would not be paid to everyone, but any (adult) citizen could become eligible for it. (Any nation could adopt this paradigm.) The amount of the income would be tied to the existing median (or perhaps average) income. Ending poverty is only one of the benefits of a DDI to society.
