The rulers of France at the time sought to rule their subjects as much as possible (as opposed to their personal lives so much) according to the doctrines of the Catholic Church. I read somewhere that back then the Church forbade eating potatoes. So protestant nations, where eating potatoes was permitted, were better off than Catholic nations, where it was forbidden to grow and eat them. _
