The fundamental problem here (in the U.S.) is the lack of an ethic for governance (individuals or institutions). We (supposedly) 'believe in' equality and liberty, but no matter how much anyone 'loves' either of them, neither is an ethic: a rule for governance. It is asserted by many people here that 'religion' used to fill that void, but the history of this nation reveals no evidence of that.
