It morphed into political efforts aimed at proving that they were really 'good Christians', not racists and bigots. It then morphed into a power trip based on an irrational hatred of 'liberalism'--which was responsible for the racial integration of American society and 'attacks' on the white (heterosexual) male domination of it.
