That is a case well made, but I do disagree. Monuments are part of history, but knowledge of history is in no way dependent on them. I would prefer that we had the sense as a species to refrain from ever erecting monuments. According to your argument, they always stand for something that will be proven to be "wrong." They represent history 'being written by the victors'; historically, victors have almost always been oppressors.
