Thanks for such a thoughtful and thought-provoking article.

Personally, I am convinced that the angst of the 'West' is caused by the dawning realization that Liberalism--the idea that equality and liberty are ethically sufficient for justly governing society--has reached its theoretical and practical limits. A new approach for justly governing society is needed.

The great lesson to be gleaned from Liberalism is that basing justice on beliefs--personal convictions--makes really achieving justice impossible. It necessarily entails some peoples' beliefs concerning the most basic ideas as to what constitutes just governance being privileged over the beliefs of others.

All beliefs held by any person(s) are completely arbitrary from the point of view of any other person. So basing the just governance of society on beliefs puts arbitrariness at the very core of the governance of society, and as John Locke realized way back in 1689, arbitrariness in human relations is injustice.

if by any chance curious for more along that line--and a proposed solution: "Needed A Replacement for Liberalism" (here in Medium, but not behind the paywall)
