Thanks for a truly excellent article. As someone born in the state of Georgia (U.S.A.) in 1952, I would say that life was very close to being like that for the WASPs (white, anglo-saxon protestants) in many rural towns--not only in the south of the U.S. It was like that because any 'others' were as absent from the consideration of the WASPs as they were in that show: the only people that mattered, that had to be taken into account, were 'their kind'. It really was as if any 'others' did not exist.
