Thank you for that very interesting and succinct exposition. I thought the point that on the continent the tribal chiefs could retain the imperial structures of government but in Britannia those structures had “collapsed” suggests a great deal about the differences that developed between England and the nation-states on the continent: in the latter the monarchs were more able to establish absolute rule due to the continuation of those structures.
