I only recently read Karen Armstrong’s The Great Transformation about the “Axial Age” and one thing I have wondered about was why it took so long after complex societies had developed to get around to formulating updated ethical paradigms to replace intimate personal relationships for moral governance. A similar lag applies to large-scale religious gatherings (with Stonehenge apparently being one site for such activities, dating from about 3,000 B.C.). Interestingly, social media seem to be taking us back towards the more ‘primitive’ form of moral governance.
