Texas--and the South--didn't flip, the two major political parties did. Following the abolition of (legally mandated) racial segregation and the Civil Rights laws, racists and bigots were invited to leave the Democratic Party for the Republican Party (Nixon's infamous 'southern strategy'), and they did.
