Surely we can all agree that "Hippie Jesus" is at least closer to what is written in the Gospels. Of course, there is great debate about the 'historical Jesus', too. I like John Dominic Crossan's view, having read his The Hisorical Jesus: The Life of a Mediterranean Jewish Peasant and Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography, both of which--especially the latter--I highly recommend. I'll be following to get this author's perspective.
