Sure, anything means whatever it means to anybody, but it seems really a stretch to make that song into anything other than a narrative of the emotional emptiness of striving for and achieving success in the music industry. Campbell had migrated to 'country' music from 'rock', and there, of course, into the 60's male stars had been pretty much required to wear jackets studded with rhinestones along with their Stetson hats.
