So the Middle Ages were a hotbed of individualism? That is a new and different perspective in my intellectual experience.
The point that capitalism is a social construct in the guise of individualism is more like it.
To my mind, Marxism is teleological because it asserts that private property is the source of exploitation, therefore classes, therefore class conflict, thus making the abolition of private property the means for ending that dynamic.
I have found that exploitation can be eliminated without abolishing private property. There would still be no limit on income/wealth (for those who earned their money without exploiting others).
