Race-based slavery, slavery based on the conceit that Africans were only of value as slaves, was systemically a much different thing than slavery in the ancient world was. That insistence on inherent inferiority/superiority continues to inform today's systemic racism in the U.S.--the only nation in which a war had to be fought to end such slavery.
