One of the more thought-provoking essays I've ever read. One thing that is present but not explicitly identified is 'spontaneity'.

I think it accounts for much of the attraction of "amateur" productions of all kinds--including the amateur politician, Donald Trump (at least early on, before his act got so predictable; his hardcore fans love that he spews contempt on all things liberal, which is all they want). Sports also has a spontaneity--unpredictability--that even 'reality' shows lack.

As for truth and authenticity, my experience has taught me that people's desire for those can be easily overrated.
