Not long ago I would have said that beliefs are the culprit, that beliefs concerning how society should be governed drive politics towards "fascism" (totalitarianism). In the end, political contests following from differing beliefs can only be contests of power, not rational debate. Victory ultimately requires utterly vanquishing all rival beliefs. ("Critical Theory" has a very similar analysis, but has "ideology" in place of "beliefs"--but all ideologies are based on secular beliefs, just as all theologies are based on sacral beliefs.)

Now, though, this neo-right is not even based on belief. It is nothing but pure, unvarnished hatred. The ultimate source of such hatred is beyond me to know, but I do know that it is focused on 'liberalism'.
