More on point, thanks for some new and interesting knowledge. I wonder if some German generals wanted Rommel in Africa so he wouldn't be involved in the Russia campaign? I would imagine his propensity for irresponsible, self-serving actions was known to others. "What harm could he do in the middle of a desert on the other side of the Mediterranean?" they might have been thinking.
