I’ve been saying all along that the potential effects of global warming on agriculture, on which civilization depends, are our most immediate worry. Through agriculture, civilization has depended on one climate for all of its several thousand years of existence. Now we are changing that climate. The integrated, international, “industrial” agriculture that is coextensive with contemporary civilization has only existed since the middle of the 1900's.
