Isn't one point of an ethic to judge potential actions? Sure, life coming down to material survival can trump any immaterial ethic. Killing others simply to keep from sharing when everyone would still have enough for survival is not that. Living ethically so as not to jeopardize the ecosystem of the entire planet would help avoid facing a draconian choice.
