In non-civilized human societies (hunter-gather and nomadic herder) the survival of the individuals has always been dependent on the survival of the group; the survival of the group has always required cooperation. Civilization replaced cooperation with exploitation of some by others. Marx thought human development would inevitably replace exploitation with cooperation in civilization. My studies have taught me that to get there we have to recognize mutual respect as the ethic of justice (following from observation within material existence).
