In my opinion global warming is a do-or-die proposition, not an optimality problem. As I see it, the scale of the possible horror transcends statistical analysis: like calculating the odds you'll be eaten alive--or maybe just lose a leg--jumping into the ocean where a Great White is known to be prowling.
