Ideology was invented, as Europe emerged from its feudal stage, to replace theology as a means of establishing how the governance of society should be governed. We are learning now that ideology is every bit as inadequate as theology was for that purpose.
Both have beliefs as their foundation. Beliefs, whether sacral/theological or secular/ideological, divide us.
I would say that Liberalism was the best ideology because it took justice to be something 'real', something human beings actually need. For that very reason, today progress must consist in moving beyond Liberalism, to a strictly rational understanding of justice.
