I would define "unproductive investment" more broadly: anything that is bought for the sole purpose of re-selling it for a profit. That includes stocks bought in secondary markets, i.e.., buying stocks that are not new issues of stock by a corporation. Productive investments are aimed at, well, producing something--some good or service.
