I, too, have become convinced that preserving democracy — and liberty, for that matter — requires an advance in our understanding of Liberal justice. As I see it, we are experiencing the consequences of a society built on a conception of justice that has no ethic of justice, no definite rule for governing the governance of individuals and institutions. Liberty by itself is the opposite of such a rule and equality in itself is not a rule of any kind. Equality does, however, imply an ethic of justice: mutual respect. So an advance in Liberal justice would be realizing mutual respect as the ethic of justice. For that, "Equality Is All We Need" (here in Medium): a society governed by mutual respect would experience the maximum liberty that co-existing individuals can share simultaneously, reinforced political democracy, and a transformation of the outcomes for society of the existing economy — any existing economy.
