I think that in general when people’s proffered beliefs are merely being rejected the proponents of those beliefs they feel like they are being attacked. That seems to be the nature of beliefs. Evangelicals feel the most persecuted because they are the most vociferous proponents of beliefs.

The only belief most ‘secularists’ have is a belief in human equality. Few people in this country publicly reject that belief — though evangelicals come closest to it, with their sense of their own moral superiority. When it comes down to it, they are sure they are better people than non-evangelicals can be.
