I see Rand's philosophy as an attempt to apply to society the premise of the "State of Nature" of Hobbes and Locke, in which humans exist as separate and isolated individuals rather than the social beings we are by nature. That unrealistic premise informs 'individualism' as we know it: the promotion of self-centeredness. We need to rethink individualism as other-centered.
