I really don't want to "understand" it. To me, that's like someone wanting me to 'understand' race-based slavery, or 'White Man's Burden' as a rationale for colonialism, etc. by considering what's written in the Bible. All religions have had beliefs that contradict justice. That doesn't make any religion entirely wrong, but any beliefs--sacral/theological or secular/ideological--that contradict justice need to be consigned to the 'dustbin of history'.
