I read somewhere on Medium a proposal I like: establish a large, graduated federal tax on housing purchases (to include new construction, of course) above the local median price, the money from which would be dedicated to subsidizing housing for people below the local median income. That would at the same time shift the entire demand curve--therefore supply--in the direction of less opulent abodes that more people could afford
