I hope your more optimistic conjecture turns out to be correct, but I am skeptical. Between theology, ideology (both based on non-rational beliefs), romanticism, and the postmodern assault on ‘the rational’, as a species we have been thoroughly alienated from our rational capacity — which is our only given commonality as human beings.
I have developed a thoroughly rationalistic ethic of justice — mutual respect in effecting choices — and people all but universally ignore it when they don’t explicitly reject it (without refuting it). You, Mr. Meyer, are among them.
