I have a theory, based on bits and pieces gleaned here and there, that at least in the eastern part of North America the indigenous peoples were slowly working towards a form of civilization--the existence of cities--that would be free of the exploitation (to include slavery on a large scale) and large-scale conflict (much of it driven by a 'need' to acquire more slaves) that have characterized civilization as it developed elsewhere.
