I do think there is a difference between "selfish" and "self-centered." The latter isn't limited to acting selfishly. Being self-centered does, I think, mean--or lead inevitably to--a tendency to ignore the legitimate interests of others in our interactions, such as in the ongoing interactions involving the owner of a business and the people employed in it.
