I do think it is important to distinguish between Liberalism, the meta-ideology that has equality and liberty as the twin pillars of a just society, and liberalism as one of the narrower political ideologies that Liberalism has spawned — along with libertarianism, conservatism, and democratic (non-Marxist) socialism. Rather than a “middle way,” I think we need to think in terms of ‘common ground’ within Liberalism for governing society. I think mutual respect offers that. It follows from a belief in equality and it would maximize liberty as a practical matter. It is, I think, the ethic that actually informs political democracy. I have worked out a way to extend it efficaciously to the economy as a system.
If interested, I have published,, among other things, “Re-thinking Individualism” and “Re-thinking the Economy’s ‘Fuel System’” in Medium.
