I do see a way out. To go forward we need a new advance in our understanding of what justice is.

Liberalism, with liberty and equality as the 'twin pillars of justice' for society was an advance in our understanding of what justice is.

It was not the final word on the subject. Its inadequacies are being exposed. My studies have convinced me that we must recognize as the ethic of justice mutual respect (of a basic kind: taking one another into account).

Mutual respect follows from a belief in equality. It already governs democracy. It can be applied efficaciously to the existing economy, via a "democratically distributed income."

That sounds radical, but it is not. It would not involve tearing down any of the existing institutional structure,

Still, it is revolutionary. It would transform the outcomes for society of the existing economy.
