I do like the essence of Taoism. I see civilization as humanity's great error, morally. Some way of bringing a concern for 'the other' to civilization is definitely needed.

As I see it, civilization, wherever it developed, expunged the organizing principle of non-civilized societies--essentially, 'one for all and all for one'--and replaced it with some way of justifying a hierarchical social structure--usually with a ruler sanctified through religion. That lasted until the advent of Liberalism, but it includes a perverse (self-centered) form of individualism. Socialism (even in its Marxist form) merely pits equality against liberty in economic matters, without explicitly addressing Liberalism's deeper problem.
