I agree with this assessment. I am convinced that what is needed for us to make things better is an advance in our understanding of what justice is.
At this point no one can possibly believe that Liberalism is the final word on that subject. It resulted in good things, such as maximum liberty under the rule of law and a (concomitant) democratic political process, but a just society requires an ethic of justice (a definitive rule by which people can govern themselves and the political process and the economic system of society can be organized), and neither of the 'twin pillars of justice' of Liberalism (equality and liberty) is an ethic (though equality does imply an ethic of mutual respect).
