I agree that there are lots of traits that influence the lives of all people. The end of segregation made it possible for individual Americans of (according to scientists) more recent African heritage to overcome the affects of racism in their material existences. Still, the affects of centuries of overt, abject racism, first as slavery then as segregation enforced by terror (i.e., the KKK), are with us yet, and will require real effort to overcome.
