I agree that 'progressives' are wed to ideology. To my mind, progress is an advance in our understanding of justice. I that sense, the "Enlightenment" did represent progress: equality and liberty as the 'twin pillars of justice' for a society. What society needs now (assuming people aren't suddenly going to start actually loving one another) is a further advance in our understanding of justice.
