Here is a (fully developed) alternative ethical construct: "Can't Get Any Simpler," a “2 min read" here in Medium with links to more about it. (Nothing I publish here is behind the paywall.)

It is not ideological (belongs to neither the 'left' nor the 'right'), but the spine of this ethical construct also follows from 'equality': a minimum of respect that human beings owe one another merely by virtue of being fellow humans. This approach to justice, however, leaves 'equality' out of it: all that matters for this ethic is that the beings are humans.

Linking that requirement of respect to 'effecting choices' (which we humans have no choice but to do) makes it easily translatable into the political process (the process of effecting choices for the community as a whole) and the economy (the process of producing/acquiring goods/services--which is nothing but choices being effected).

The result is a requirement for a democratic political process and an economy with as much freedom of action as is consistent with that minimum of respect for all others and a 'democratically distributed income' that would ensure 'enough' for every (adult) citizen.
