From the article: "Microbes use oxygen to break down methane, producing carbon dioxide which dissolves in seawater. While this prevents methane from reaching the atmosphere, it exacerbates ocean acidification, another impact of anthropogenic climate change, and depletes oceanic oxygen content for marine life. Nonetheless, 80–90% of released methane is prevented from reaching the atmosphere by these oxidation processes (Reeburgh, 2007)."

That would also reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that the ocean can absorb from the atmosphere. All in all,, it hardly makes the release of methane less of a problem.
