Forget a different species, prior to the advent of the notion of universalism (a still-less-than-completely-realized cultural phenomenon that only began to emerge a couple of thousand or so years ago), within groups of Homo sapiens any being outside a group was considered to be 'fair game'. The only constraint on dealings with 'others' was the threat of reprisals.
