In the Modern era the only attempt at the just governance of society has been Liberalism (the meta-ideology that has equality and liberty as the 'twin pillars of justice' and has spawned various political ideologies, including libertarianism and what is called in the U.S. liberalism). One way to interpret what is going on politically across the globe is that the conceptual and practical shortcomings of Liberalism are being exposed, making it too politically weak to stave off illiberal approaches to governance.

We need a new approach to justly governing the governance of society. Here is one possible approach: "A New Liberalism" (here in Medium, but not--for the benefit of 'guest readers'--behind the paywall). Applying it to the economy would, it so happens, improve sustainability systemically, as an unintended byproduct of a more just economy (and would eliminate unemployment and poverty).
