First of all, thank you for such an interesting and informative exposition.

I would say that, at their strongest, beliefs are an assertion of (extra-rational) knowledge. In that sense, to say, “I believe in God” [which I do] is to say, “I have knowledge of the existence of God.”

Secular beliefs also exist. They are also extra-rational. They are the foundations of ideologies. Ideologies are secular religions.

This world would immediately become a better place if everyone could accept that all beliefs are absolutely valid for their believers, but of no consequence whatsoever for anyone else.
